national parks

First 70 by Michael Durr

The First 70, directed by Jarratt Moody, is a documentary about the closing of state parks in California. Having just hiked in Apple River Canyon State Park in Illinois over Memorial Day weekend, the idea of closing State Parks really hit home. I have been fortunate to be able travel the country and camp in some of the greatest State and National Parks the United States has to offer. It is extremely difficult to comprehend my children and their children not being able to share the same experience. Growing up I was not much of an outdoorsman and was never a Boy Scout. After college, a few of my friends and I had made an effort to take a road trip every year and only camp along the way. It's safe to say I have had some of the most rewarding times of my life on those trips. I’ve traveled as far west as Olympic National Park and have also experienced Teddy Roosevelt National Park, Isle Royal National Park, Glacier National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park and many others along my journeys. It's an experience I wish everyone to have a least once in their lives. Man was born out of nature and now it is man's job to protect nature for future generations.

Also, watch The National Parks: America's Best Idea. It's streaming on Netflix and it is worth every minute.
